Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
