At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
